Peanut wood jasper is a form of fossilised or petrified wood. The organic material of Peanutwood Jasper jewelry is replaced by agate during the decomposition process, and this turns wood into stone over a long period. Before the petrification of the wood, the driftwood in the ocean got attacked by small marine shellfish called “teredo.” This teredo bore small tunnels into the wood, perforating the entire piece of boreholes. The wood then became waterlogged and sunk into the muddy ocean bottom. The boreholes got filled with light-coloured sediments before the beginning of the petrification process. This entire petrification process is said to have occurred 70 million years ago.
